Help is Our Main Goal
Network of Maharashtra People with HIV (NMP+) is a community-based organization formed by people living with HIV to improve the lives and conditions of those affected by the virus. Established in 1997, our organization provides a platform for positive individuals to support each other and foster self-esteem, while empowering families impacted by HIV. We operate across Maharashtra, offering valuable services and advocacy to people from all walks of life, irrespective of gender, caste, religion, or social group.
As of January 2010, NMP+ has successfully supported over 50,000 beneficiaries, including men, women, and children living with HIV. Of these, over 23,000 individuals are on antiretroviral treatment (ART), while the remainder receive crucial support and care through our initiatives. With 34 district networks in place, we work in partnership with local organizations to extend our reach, serving as a key affiliate of the Indian Network of People with HIV (INP+).
We were registered with the government under the Society Registration Act in 2001. We have 34 district networks that provide direct services to positive people in partnership with us. In turn, we are affiliated to the Indian Network of People with HIV.
Vision
We envision a society where people living with HIV are fully integrated, supported, and empowered to live healthier, more fulfilling lives. We aim to foster a future where these individuals have equal opportunities to contribute to their communities and lead active, meaningful lives.
Mission
At NMP+, our mission is clear: to improve the quality of life for people living with HIV and their families, enabling their active participation in society. We provide a sense of belonging, offer essential health and social services, and promote the reduction of further HIV transmission through advocacy, education, and access to treatment.
Our Work
Our work spans three core areas: Advocacy, Service Delivery, and Network Building.
We are helped in our advocacy by Samarth Project, which aims to ‘Improve the effectiveness of the response of government and civil society for evidence based HIV policy and programmes.
Service Delivery
We have a number of programmes through which we provide services to people with HIV. Many of these are provided through our valued partners, the district networks. These include the Access to Care and Treatment (ACT) Project, CHAHA project working with children, Youth Rights for Sexual and Reproductive Health, and a new project, Targeted Intervention for Migrants (TIM). The main objective of this project is “To halt and reverse the prevalence of Sexual Transmitted Infections (STI), and HIV/AIDS among the migrant population and to provide quality services for their sexual health needs in Pune”. Migrant workers are considered a bridge population. They are vulnerable to HIV through contact with sex workers, and then sometimes spreading the disease to their families. Through these projects we:
- provide information, counseling, nutrition and other support to positive people including widows support children including orphans
- provide condoms, medical services and knowledge to high risk population groups
- offering health insurance to positive people in Maharashtra since December 2008 through Project Connect, in partnership with Star Insurance and Population Services International. The insurance is subsidised by PSI with funding from USAID. We have insured 719 people so far
- provide treatment and advice directly through the TAAL Pharmacy, in partnership with the corporate social responsibility arm of the drug company Emcure
- The Pathway project works in 8 communities of Pune. In that time we have served 2000 clients in the 8 communities
- The project is funded by Center for Disease Control, who channels the funds through Project Concern International
In 2009 NMP+ was honoured to be asked to be a sub-recipient for the CHAHA project. This means we are responsible to Alliance/ India for CHAHA services to seven projects in the districts of Kolhapur, Mumbai, Pune, Sangli, Satara, and Solapur.
Network building
- organizing, training and co-ordinating District Level Networks to reach out to people with HIV. We now have district networks covering the whole of Maharashtra
- supporting women’s forums to give a greater voice to women and children affected by HIV
- our network building work continues with the establishment of Taluka Level networks, and we are planning a Men having Sex with Men forum.
Income generation
We have established a number of income generation projects to help positive people earn a livelihood so they can afford adequate nutrition and support themselves and their families.
TAAL Pharmacy
Taal is a community pharmacy run and supported by the people within the HIV community, in partnership with the CSR arm of drug company Emcure. TAAL is Treatment, Advocacy, Adherence, Literacy.
